Two Officers Injured By Unruly Passenger On Metra Train: Blotters

Duo tries to sell stolen car at dealership, $6,500 dating website scam; DUI charge after hit-and-run crashes: New Trier Area Police Blotters

The following information comes from the Glencoe, Northfield, Wilmette and Winnetka police departments as a record of police activity and incidents reported to the police. Criminal charges represent merely accusations by the state and are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Cook County Clerk of the Circuit Court. Anyone arrested is innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.


GLENCOE

INCIDENTS

CHECK FRAUD ATTEMPT
A Hohlfelder Road resident reported around 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 9 that someone had unsuccessfully tried to cash one of their old checks.

CAR/GARAGE BURGLARIES
Four unlocked cars were found burglarized between 3 and 6:30 a.m. on Jan. 10. In the 500 block of Sunset Lane, someone stole various DVDs from inside an unlocked Jeep and used a remote garage door opener to get into the garage. The garage was rummaged through but nothing was stolen from inside. In the 1100 block of Oak Ridge Drive, someone stole a pair of sunglasses form from inside a Volkswagen. And in the 1000 block of Oak Ridge Drive, someone rummaged through a Lincoln and a Volkswagen, but nothing was reported stolen.

FLEEING POLICE
Around 4:45 p.m. on Jan. 11, police reported the driver of a silver BMW SUV fled more than 35 mph above the speed limit and ran a stop sign after an officer tried to pull the vehicle over around Sheridan Road and Scott Avenue.

CAR BURGLARY/CREDIT CARD FRAUD
Someone stole a credit card and a GPS system from an unlocked pickup truck in the 600 block of Vernon Avenue prior to 2 p.m. on Jan. 14. Police reported someone tried unsuccessfully to use the stolen card.

ROAD RAGE
Around 10 a.m. on Jan. 17, a motorist stopped his car in the 700 block of Dundee Road and approached another driver while yelling. He kicked the other driver's car, causing damage and fled before officers arrived, police were told.

STOLEN CAR
An unlocked Jeep with its keys left inside was stolen from the 900 block of Sheridan Road around 2 a.m. on Jan. 21. Police reported it was found later in the day somewhere in Chicago.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A Jefferson Avenue resident reported on Jan. 16 that someone had scammed them into providing personal information after claiming to be calling from the Social Security and Drug Enforcement administrations. There was no financial loss at the time of the report.
  • A Brookside Lane resident reported on Jan. 19 that someone had used their identity in an unsuccessful attempt to open an account with Saks Fifth Avenue. There was no financial loss at the time of the report.
  • A Hogarth Lane resident reported on Jan. 20 that someone had used their identity in an attempt to buy a car online through a dealership in Indiana. The transaction was declined and there was no loss reported.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

Lizzele M. Williams, 28, of the 3100 block of West Monroe Street, Chicago, and Kierra C. Daniels, 27, of the 2600 block of West 12th Place, Chicago, were arrested around 7:15 p.m. on Jan. 8 in the 2000 block of Frontage Road and charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle. Police said they were at CarMax trying to sell a stolen car suspected of having been rented in Florida and never returned.

Neal S. Portis, 37, of the 3200 block of West Fulton Street, Chicago, was arrested around 4:45 p.m. on Jan. 11 and charged with felony resisting arrest causing an injury to a police officer, theft of services, criminal trespass to state land and obstructing identification after being physically removed from a Metra train in the 700 block of Old Green Bay Road. Police reported he refused to pay his fare, declined to identify himself and gave a false name before fighting with police. One officer was reportedly elbowed in the face and the other suffered a cut and swelling on the wrist.

A 57-year-old Mansfield, Ohio, man was arrested around 2:30 a.m. on Jan. 18 near Dundee Road and the Edens Expressway and issued an open cannabis in a vehicle citation after officers found about 6.5 grams of marijuana. He was also issued citations for driving with only one headlight and without insurance.

NORTHFIELD

INCIDENTS

THREATENING CALL
A staff member at the Northshore Senior Center, 161 Northfield Road, reported around 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 14 that they had received a threatening phone call from a client. Police reported they spoke with the caller, who apologized. Staff did not wish to press charges.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
A resident in the 400 block of Whittier Lane reported around 5 p.m. on Jan. 15 that a private street sign was lying on the ground after being removed from its post and the stop sign at the corner of Whittier Lane and Willow Road also appeared to have been bent.

DATING WEBSITE SCAM
A Sunset Ridge Road resident reported on Jan. 17 that they had been defrauded into transferring $6,500 amount of money to an account in an undisclosed country to someone that met on an online dating website.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

A 23-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 9:15 a.m. on Jan. 9 near Willow Road and Three Lakes Drive and charged with driving with a suspended license. Police also issued citations for speeding 41 mph in a 30 mph zone and no front license plate.

A 42-year-old Chicago woman was arrested around 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 9 near Willow Road and Alice Place and charged with charged with driving with a suspended license. She was also issued a driving without lights when required citation.


WILMETTE

INCIDENTS

EMAIL SCAM
A Chilton Lane resident reported being scammed into buying $1,000 worth of prepaid gift cards by an email that appeared to come from their boss. The resident only realized it was a scam after speaking with their actual boss.

CRIMINAL DAMAGE
A resident in the 700 block of 10th Street reported that someone threw an object through their front window at 8:50 p.m. on Jan. 8.

PHONE SCAM
An 11th Street resident reported on Jan. 16 that a caller convinced them to buy $1,000 in Best Buy gift cards after telling the resident their computer had been hacked.

SHOPLIFTING
Staff at the Walgreens, 3232 Lake Ave., reported that a female shoplifter had stolen an unspecified amount of over-the-counter medication around 3:10 p.m. on Jan. 17.

CAR BURGLARIES

  • Someone stole several tools from inside the truck of an employee of a sewer viewing company contracted by the village between 11 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. on Jan. 6.
  • Someone broke out the rear passenger side window of two cars in the 1900 block of Wilmette Avenue, stealing stole multiple items from one of them at some point between 3:30 p.m. on Jan. 11 and 1:30 p.m. on Jan. 12.
  • A cell phone was stolen from an unlocked car parked in the 1200 block of Elmwood Avenue on Jan. 18 or Jan. 19.

THEFTS

  • A patron at Panera Bread, 1199 Wilmette Ave., reported that someone stole their wallet form a purse while it was hanging on a chair. A credit card from inside was used before it was canceled.
  • Someone stole shoes from a common area of an apartment building in the 200 block of Ridge Road between Jan. 7 and Jan. 15.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

A 27-year-old Prospect Heights man was arrested around 11:30 a.m. on Jan. 9 and charged with driving without a valid license after officers were dispatched to a three-car traffic crash with injuries near Lake Avenue and Hibbard Road.

Marcus Winchester, 30, of the 1600 block of Broadway Street in Niles, Michigan, was arrested around 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 17 after officers were dispatched to the area of southbound Sheridan Road at Forest Avenue for a report of a possibly intoxicated driver who had been involved in a pair of traffic crashes. Following a traffic stop and field sobreity testing, the driver, Winchester, produced a sample indicating a breath alcohol concentration of 0.218, more than two and a half times legal limit for intoxication. He was charged with two counts of driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of two accidents. Police also issued him a citation for leaving the scene of two crashes.


WINNETKA

INCIDENTS

HOME BURGLARY
A resident in the 200 block of Birch Street reported around 6 p.m. on Jan. 9 that someone had broken into their home by damaging a glass door and stole several pieces of jewelry from inside. The total loss was unknown at the time of the report.

FORGERY
An employee at an unspecified business in the 900 block of Green Bay Road reported at 11:45 a.m. on Jan. 15 that someone had made a purchase using five counterfeit $100 bills.

THEFT
Someone stole more than $5,000 worth of jewelry from a purse that had been left unattended for multiple periods between 3:30 and 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 18 at a business in the 500 block of Chestnut Street.

IDENTITY THEFTS

  • A Forest Glen Drive resident reported that someone had used their identity to open an unauthorized Wells Fargo checking account at some point between Nov. 6 and Jan. 7.
  • A Sheridan Road resident reported on Jan. 18 that someone had used their identity to open a Citibank credit card account and attempted to open a JC Penny credit card account between Jan. 5 and Jan. 11.

ARRESTS/CITATIONS

A 20-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 1:45 a.m. on Jan. 10 in the 800 block of Sheridan Road and charged with driving without a valid driver's license. He was also issued a no rear license plate light citation.

Matthew J. Reichart, 29, of the 18100 block of State Route 62 in Beloit, Ohio, was arrested around 8:30 a.m. on Jan. 14 near Sheridan Road and Pine Street on arrest warrants issued by Cook County and Indiana authorities after he was taken into custody by officers dispatched to the area for a report that Reichart was yelling at passing cars.

Christopher G. Broeski, 30, of the 2600 block of Westbrook Drive, Franklin Park, was arrested around 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 19 in the 900 block of Hill Road and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater. He was also issued citations for improper turning, speeding, improper lane usage and disobeying a stop sign.

An 18-year-old Chicago man was arrested and charged with speeding between 26 and 34 mph over the limit following a traffic stop around 10:30 p.m. on Jan. 19 in the 1200 block of Willow Road.
