Veterans Day 2017: What's Closed, What's Open On The North Shore

Find out when and where your town is marking Veterans Day.

Veterans Day this year is Saturday, Nov. 11. Events will be held across Chicago's North Shore to honor those who have served. Government offices will be closed on Friday in observance of the weekend holiday, but most schools will remain open.

  • Banks: Most are closed. Call your bank if you're thinking of stopping by.
  • Post Offices: Closed
  • Federal Offices: Closed
  • Local Government Offices: Most Closed Friday
  • Trash Pickup: Normal
  • Most restaurants will be open, some will offer discount to active military personnel and veterans.

DEERFIELD

On Friday, Nov. 11 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., David Shamrock and Kailey Schwartzhoff host a pancake breakfast and musical tribute at the Patty Turner Center, 375 Elm St. Enjoy patriotic favorites performed by the local Hummers and Strummers and a flapjack buffet catered by the Cherry Pit Café to pay homage to the men and women of the armed forces.

Also Friday, the Village of Deerfield and the American Legion Deerfield Post 738 have invited the community to take part in the "Give Where You Live – Deerfield" service campaign to make a difference in the lives of area veterans. Join Mayor Harriet Rosenthal from noon to 3 p.m. at Village Hall for service activities suitable for all ages.

Then, Saturday at 11 a.m., Deerfield American Legion Post 738 and Mayor Harriet Rosenthal are set to honor veterans with a Veterans Day Service at the Veterans' Memorial at the intersection of Jewett Park and Park Avenue.

EVANSTON

In Evanston, where all city employees are getting an unpaid furlough day for Veterans Day in 2017, a commemorative ceremony will be held at Patriots Park, at the corner of Davis Street and Sheridan Road, at beginning at 10 a.m. on Nov. 11 to honor the service of the U.S. military and its veterans.

HIGHLAND PARK

The Fort Sheridan Historical Society is holding a wreath-laying ceremony at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 11 at the Fort Sheridan flag pole on the west end of the parade to honor veterans. Three honor scouts from Lake Forest Troop 48 will perform the honors.

A Veterans Day ceremony will be held Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. at the Highland Park Public Library, 494 Laurel Avenue, in the adult services section. Representatives from the American Legion Post #145, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #4737 and Jewish War Veterans #29 will be present. Korean War U.S. Army Veteran Jerry Adler will be honored. The Highland Park High School Brass Quintet will perform patriotic music, and Mayor Nancy Rotering and other special guests will speak.

The Park District of Highland Park is offering free passes or other benefits to veterans and active military personell with ID at Centennial Ice Area, the Recreation Center of Highland Park, Deer Creek Racquet Club, Golf Learning Center and Highland Park Country Club.

Highland Park city offices will be close Friday, Nov. 10 in observance of Veterans Day.

LAKE FOREST

Lake Forest American Legion Post #264 and Lake Forest High School are hosting a Veterans Day Program Friday, Nov. 10 from 12:55 p.m. to 1:40 p.m. at Raymond Moore Auditorium at LFHS. The event is set to include a panel of veterans, student presentations, the Lake Forest High School Band and Chorus and more.

NILES

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3579 and Village of Niles officials invite the community to the Veterans Memorial Waterfall at Touhy and Milwaukee Avenue for an 11 a.m. ceremony on Nov. 11. Immediately following the ceremony, the VFW will host an open house at the White Eagle banquet hall. All are invited to attend.

NORTHBROOK

The Northbrook Park District is holding a Veterans Day Breakfast at the Nov. 10 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Leisure Center, 3323 Walters Ave.

The American Legion Post #791 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars invite the public to participate in a Veterans Day service at Northbrook Junior High School, 1475 Maple Ave., on Nov. 11 from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. The featured speaker will be 30-year U.S. Army veteran Lt. Col. James Ossey, who will discuss his experience in the Army and what Veterans Day means to him. There will be a special performance from the Northbrook Junior High Wind Ensemble, and the event will be live-streamed to the community from District 28.

SKOKIE

The public is invited to the Legacy Memorial Dedication at Veterans Park, 8150 Lincoln Ave., at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 12. Veterans and military service people will be honored and the park's new inscribed brick memorial will be officially unveiled.

WILMETTE

The American Legion Wilmette Post 46, the Wilmette Police and Fire Departments and the Chicago Highlanders plan to honor the nation's veterans on Nov. 11 11 a.m. at Veteran's Park, 1111 Central Avenue.

WINNETKA

The community is invited to attend a Veterans’ Day program at the Winnetka Community House, 620 Lincoln Avenue, on Nov. 11 at 5 p.m. The event will feature retired U.S. Navy Master Chief Mike Korman. The one-hour program is sponsored by the Winnetka Park District, Village of Winnetka, Winnetka Club, Hadley School for the Blind Veterans Initiative, New Trier V.F.W.
