What's Open, Closed, Planned on Veterans Day on the North Shore

Deerfield: The Village of Deerfield and the American Legion Deerfield Post 738 invites everyone to participate in the Give Where You Live – Deerfield service campaign to make a difference in the lives of area veterans. Spearheaded by Deerfield Mayor Harriet Rosenthal, Give Where You Live – Deerfield is collecting donations now through Friday, when volunteers will come together to make no-sew fleece blankets, assemble care packages and write letters of thanks and encouragement to veteran. The event will be held at the Deerfield Village Hall, 850 Waukegan Road, from noon to 3 p.m. Everyone can help, starting now, by donating:

• Non-perishable food
• Clothing, small appliances and household items
• Sweat suits, socks and underwear
• Toiletries
• Gift cards to popular chain restaurants, such as McDonalds, Subway and Dunkin’ Donuts
• Monetary donations
Donations are earmarked for West Deerfield Township Food Pantry for local Veterans, Midwest Veteran’s Closet (where Veterans can shop for free) in North Chicago, VA Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago, and COOL Ministries. Items can be delivered to the Deerfield Police Department, 850 Waukegan Road, prior to Veterans Day, or to the Village Hall on Veterans Day. Then, join Mayor Rosenthal on Veterans Day at Village Hall from noon to 3 p.m. for service activities suitable for all ages. A Veterans Day Ceremony Tour, part of the Village of Deerfield's Veterans Day observances, is cosponsored by the American Legion Deerfield Post 738 and the Deerfield Area Historical Society. Explore Deerfield's military history with a special tour highlighting the veterans buried in the Deerfield Historical Cemetery and the wars they served in. An audio tour will be available to access from a smartphone and staff will be on-site to assist in that from 2 PM until 4 PM. At 2:30 PM there will be a staff-led tour of the cemetery. This tour takes about an hour, and goes over uneven terrain outside. Please dress accordingly! Parking will be available on Central Ave. Register here.

Evanston: The annual Veterans Day Ceremony will be held at Fountain Square in downtown Evanston on Friday, November 11. Assembly will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. In keeping with the time-honored traditions of our past ceremonies, there will be non-denominational reflections, some singing and some remarks by the leaders of local veterans groups such as Evanston American Legion Post 42 and Tech. Sgt William B. Snell VFW Post 7186. This event will be held at Fountain Square on Davis Street between Sherman and Orrington Avenues.

Highland Park: City Hall will be closed. Event at 11 a.m. at the Highland Park Public Library, 494 Laurel Ave. Introduction - Mayor Nancy Rotering Special Guests: Representative Julie Morrison Representative Scott Drury Col. Brett Turner - Fort Sheridan Performance: Highland Park High School Band.

Lake Forest: In observance of Veteran's Day, offices at City Hall (220 E. Deerpath) and the Municipal Services Building (800 N. Field Drive) will be closed.

Northbrook: Remember our Veterans, as well as those currently serving our country, on November 11. All are invited to Northbrook Jr. High, 1475 Maple, for a 10:30am service complete with Color Guard and a special performance by the Northbrook Jr. High Wind Ensemble. School District 28 will be live-streaming the Veterans Day ceremony for community members. To view the performance live at 10:30am, visit www.district28.net

Wilmette: American Legion Wilmette Post 46 will be hosting a Veteran’s Day Observance on Friday, November 11th at 11:00 a.m. at Veteran’s Park, 1109 Central Avenue.

Winnetka: The community is invited to attend a Veterans' Day Ceremony at the Community House at 5:00 PM on Friday, November 11. The veteran speaker will be Chuck Lauer, a long-time Winnetka resident and U.S. Army Veteran. Click here for more information. New Trier High School will observe Veterans Day with a variety of activities on Tuesday, Nov. 8 at the Northfield Campus and Wednesday, Nov. 9 at the Winnetka Campus. There is a scheduled Institute Day on the holiday, Friday, Nov. 11. The main events will be flag-raising ceremonies. Other activities include: writing a thank you note to a member of the armed services during lunch periods; recognizing friends and family by adding their names to a list ofveterans on display; American flags placed along the sidewalks to the school; and contributing new khaki pants, shoes and belts to collection boxes Nov. 9-23 for homelessveterans seeking job interviews.
