Winnetka Fire Chief Wins Life Safety Award

Fire Chief Alan Berkowsky will be honored for the rebate program that allowed sprinklers to be installed in the village's business district.

WINNETKA, IL - Winnetka Fire Chief Alan Berkowsky will be presented a Life Safety Award this week by the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance for his work in initiating a "fire sprinkler implementation" process in the village.

The process for which Berkowsky will be awarded has increased life safety through fire sprinkler installations in older buildings in Winnetka’s business district, according to a news release from the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance.

"The rebate program affects older buildings that must retrofit fire sprinklers when there is a change of occupancy use," according to the release. "It allows property owners to be reimbursed for fees related to the fire sprinkler installation, such as plan review, water tap and street and/or right-of-way openings. Also, the installation of a new water service can be deferred for up to five years."

Berkowsky says his award represents the work the Winnetka Village Council did on "balancing fire safety with economic development."

"It was a creative way to show support for the business district while maintaining the need for fire safety," he said. "Many of our business district structures are unique in their design and construction. Fire sprinklers will provide the businesses as well as residents living above with the best possible protection against fire."

The chief added that the sprinkler ordinance has "many unique features," including a rebate of Village fees and "the ability to defer the cost of a new water service for up to five years."

Berkowsky will be honored and presented with the award Thursday night at the 76th annual Fire Prevention Week Luncheon, which will be held at Bobak’s Signature Events, 6440 Double Eagle Drive in Woodridge.
