Career Change Leads to Happiness, Local Chiro Practice for DGN Grad

When Kurt Brewer decided he wanted to change careers, he didn't have to look far to find a new direction.

His grandfather was a doctor, his dad worked in health care and his brother was a chiropractor, making Brewer's switch from hospitality management to chiropractor an easy one.

Now, after working with his brother in Chicago for a year, the 29-year-old Brewer has opened a practice in Downers Grove, subletting office space from long-time chiropractor Todd Bowers on Ogden Avenue in the same building as the Charter One Bank branch west of Main Street.

“I wanted to find somewhere local where I could give back to the area I grew up in,” said Brewer, who grew up in Woodridge and attended . He now lives in Downers Grove.

Brewer said the commute to and from Chicago was draining, and opening a business in Downers Grove has given him an opportunity to spend more time with friends and family.

It's also given Brewer an opportunity to work in the same space as Dr. Bowers, which has been beneficial to Brewer and his fledgling practice. The knowledge Bowers has is a great benefit to Brewer and Brewer feels comfortable knowing the two of them share the same values.

“I think the reason we get along so well is we both have the same values, we care about people, we see eye-to-eye,” Brewer said. “We want to help everyone in the safest way we can and get people back to doing what they want to do.”

, the official name of Brewer's practice, offers a range of services from chiropractic care, acupuncture, aquatic rehab (at a facility in Skokie) and more. To Brewer, one of the great perks of his job is when people find out chiropractors do a lot more than snapping bones.

“There's a wide range of things we do,” Brewer said. “A lot of people think it's just cracking necks and backs, but that's just a a small piece of the pie. Even my friends don't know what I do. When I explain it to them, they say 'I didn't know you guys could do that.'”

Brewer is eager to grow his business and have the opportunity to show people everything a chiropractor can do, and he's buoyed by a happiness and sense of satisfaction he didn't get in the hospitality industry.

“It's a unique experience to help someone with your hands and see results instantly,” Brewer said. “I like what I do, and I'm really happy with it. That's something I probably couldn't say five years ago.”
