Prince of Peace to Celebrate 50th Anniversary

The first gathering of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church was on Oct. 16, 1961.

will celebrate its 50th anniversary in January. 

The church is located at 2600 W. 75th St. in Woodridge. 

The first gathering of the church was on Oct. 16, 1961, as a mission church of Our Saviors Lutheran Church of Naperville. The charter for the church was signed on Jan. 21, 1962 under the leadership of Pastor John E. Swanson.

Pastors in the past 50 years include Swanson, Charles Huffman, John Lundeen, Albert Weidlich, William Gerber and Paul Kopka. Interim Pastors included Gerald Lundby, Robert Hansen and David Alderfer.

Pastor Trudy Stoffel currently serves the church. She came to shortly after her ordination, and has been at the church for four years.

There are two events to honor the church's 50th anniversary.

There will be a dinner at Ashton Place in Darien on Jan. 20. Past members and friends are invited to attend. Tickets are required for the dinner, which can be purchased at the church. 

There will also be a special service at 10 a.m. on Jan. 22 with a reception to follow. Bishop Wayne Miller, Bishop of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod of the ELCA will honor us with his presence at the service.
