📰 News we're reading

1. Columbus woman facing arson charges following back-to-back house and vehicle fires (wbiw.com) — A Columbus woman has been arrested on preliminary felony arson charges after two late-night fires damaged a home she owns on 10th Street and another former property on South Jonesville Road, causing about $145,000 in damage. Columbus police, firefighters, and state investigators say gasoline was detected at both scenes, and multiple local departments assisted before she was taken into custody downtown. She remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

2. Corks, Caps and Casks Fundraiser Planned (wtreradio.com) — A reimagined Corks, Caps & Casks tasting festival is coming to The Commons in downtown Columbus on Saturday, November 7, offering unlimited samples from regional wineries, breweries, and distilleries. With standard and VIP ticket options, a silent auction, and proceeds supporting Hoosier Trails Council Scouting programs across south-central Indiana, it's a major fall fundraiser for local youth.

3. Redevelopment gets sign approval for Robert D. Garton Plaza (therepublic.com) — Columbus officials are advancing a $2.9 million redesign of the entrance into downtown, combining the Public Safety Plaza and Robert D. Garton Veterans Plaza into a new Robert D. Garton Plaza. The project would add native gardens, public safety memorial walls, amphitheater seating, a community lawn for events and possibly a farmers market, and a water feature. Final funding, including $2 million from the Railroad Overpass fund, still needs city council action.

4. The Small Indiana Town That Is a World Capital of Modern Architecture (5reasonstovisit.com) — Columbus is spotlighted as an international destination for modern architecture, with buildings by Saarinen, Pei, Meier, and others alongside the famed Miller House and Exhibit Columbus. The piece also highlights Cummins' role in the local economy, strong schools, walkable downtown, and relatively low cost of living that are drawing new residents.

5. No. 28 Bull Dogs fall to No. 19 Warriors (therepublic.com) — Columbus North's boys tennis team, ranked No. 28, dropped a 6-1 decision to No. 19 Whiteland in a seven-match varsity showdown Monday. The Bull Dogs' lone win came from Alek Devidze at No. 1 singles, while several teammates pushed their opponents to three sets or close scores. The result leaves North at 4-5 on the season.
