📰 News we're reading
1. Walmart withdraws petition for new market location near Evansville (courierpress.com) — Plans for a new Walmart Neighborhood Market and fuel station near North Green River and Millersburg roads have been halted after the company withdrew its rezoning petition with Vanderburgh County. That means no Sept. 29 public hearing and, for now, no commercial development on the largely agricultural site, a decision many nearby Evansville-area residents had pushed for over flooding, traffic, and property value concerns.

2. Evansville credit union online banking affected by data center failure (courierpress.com) — Online and mobile banking remain down for Sterling United Federal Credit Union members in Evansville after a cooling failure at an out-of-state data center disrupted its core technology provider. Most other services are restored, and leaders stress there's no data breach, but they acknowledge longstanding performance issues and say a full switch to a new technology partner is planned for April 2027.

3. CenterPoint won't say if Evansville customers were hit by data breach (courierpress.com) — Evansville residents still don't know whether their personal data was exposed in CenterPoint Energy's recently disclosed cyber incident, because the company refuses to say which customers were affected. The uncertainty comes after months of public anger here over soaring electric bills, city council resolutions, and calls for state intervention, leaving many local ratepayers worried about both their wallets and their privacy.

4. Fallen Evansville firefighter to be honored on memorial wall in Colorado Springs (14news.com) — An Evansville firefighter who served the city for 35 years is being added to the Fallen Firefighter Memorial Wall in Colorado Springs this weekend, recognized as a line-of-duty death due to job-related cancer. His colleagues and family, including other firefighters from Mt. Vernon, are honoring his legacy while local leaders highlight new safety measures to better protect Evansville firefighters from cancer and cardiac risks.

5. Diocesan schools earn high marks on IREAD assessment (evdiomessage.org) — Several Catholic elementary schools in Evansville, including Annunciation, Corpus Christi, Good Shepherd, Holy Rosary, Resurrection and St. Benedict Cathedral, achieved a perfect 100% pass rate on the IREAD exam this year. Diocese of Evansville officials say overall diocesan scores rose, far exceeding statewide averages, and credit students, teachers and families for the strong literacy gains that put local third graders on solid academic footing.
