Be Aware Of Stopped School Bus Law: Indiana State Police

Indiana State Police remind motorists about the Hoosier law concerning school buses, and what's at stake as a new school year approaches.

FISHERS, IN - The Indiana State Police want to remind motorists in Indiana to obey the state law concerning school buses, stop arms and flashing lights as the new school year begins. ISP said they receive several complaints from school corporations every school year regarding school bus stop arm violations. According to ISP, the number of school bus stop arm violations increase as the number of traveling school buses increase, as there are just over 16,000 currently.

ISP reminds drivers if a school bus is stopped with its flashing red lights activated and stop arm extended, all motorists are to stop regardless of what direction they approached the bus from. This includes multi-lane highways.

In addition, motorists traveling on a highway divided by a barrier or median are required to stop if traveling in the same direction as the school bus. ISP said no barriers or medians mean all lanes and directions must stop for a school bus.
