• Court news: Verdict in child molesting trial, sentence upheld in attack (chicagotribune.com) — A Hammond man was convicted on 14 counts, including child molesting and rape, after skipping his trial, with sentencing set for Oct. 15; police say the abuse occurred between early 2022 and mid-2024. In a separate case, the Indiana Court of Appeals upheld another Hammond man's 52-year sentence for a violent 2022 attack on a co-worker, leaving his earliest release in 2061. 
• Narrative coming of age music video & short film Casting Call (backstage.com) — A paid casting call is seeking actors from Hammond and nearby cities for a narrative coming-of-age music video and short film shooting over early October weekends. Local performers of various ages and gender identities can apply for lead and day-player roles, with rates up to $260 and some parts needing only about five hours on set.
• Lake County Commissioners endorse I-65/IN-2 economic development area (nwitimes.com) — Lake County commissioners have unanimously backed creating an 850-acre economic development district along I-65 and State Road 2 near Lowell, aimed at funding infrastructure for future projects. For Hammond residents, the story also recalls August's demolition of the city's historic Indiana Botanic Gardens mansion, tying broader county growth to the loss of a notable local landmark.
