The leaves are changing and people are making room for pumpkins on their porches and candy in their stomachs - this must mean Halloween is upon us. Online sources and local town calendars helped us compile our below list of some the best local pumpkin patches, orchards and events to check out this fall season. All open at different times and offer a wide variety of family-friendly activities and are worth checking out.

Carmel:
- Halloween Howl at the Urban Chalkboard: 452 E. Carmel Dr., Oct. 28 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Adults $10 and kids are free. The not-so-scary Halloween Howl is a family event featuring games, music, treats and an adorable costume parade. Event is included with admission.
- Family Pumpkin Painting & Pizza: Monon Community Center East, 1235 Central Park Drive East, Oct. 17, Oct. 20, 5:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., $7.

Fishers:
- Christmas in October Craft Fair: Get a jump start on your Christmas shopping at the Christmas in October Craft Fair at Fishers High School, 13000 Promise Road. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 14. Over 150 juried arts and crafters will be selling quality items at great prices. $5 adults, $3 seniors and students over 13, young ones under 12 are free.
- Boo Bash: Oct. 27, 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Nickel Plate District Amphitheater, 6 Municipal Drive. This fifth annual free Halloween Village will feature games, raffles, a live DJ and candy as kids can trick or treat at over 50 vendor booths and participate in the famous costume contest. There will be free hot chocolate and Pat’s Philly pretzels for the first 1,000 people. No registration is required, but parent supervision is.
- Headless Horseman: Oct. 12 to Oct. 29 recurring from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. weekly on Sunday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday at Conner Prairie, 13400 Allisonville Road, $17 adults, $16 seniors (ages 65+), $12 youth (ages 2-12), free for members and youth under age two.

Indianapolis:
- Day of the Dead: Oct. 28, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, 500 West Washington Street. Free admission.
- Friendly Feast with the Witches: The Children's Museum of Indianapolis, 3000 North Meridian Street, Oct. 15 through Oct. 29. Museum admission and $20. Enjoy Halloween entertainment by Ruditoonz, tour the Wicked Woods during IPL Lights-On Hours (for children who scare easily) and chat with happy, friendly witches.
- Zoo Boo: Thursday through Sunday from now until Oct. 30, 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Indianapolis Zoo, 1200 West Washington Street. Zoo admission. This annual event features some trick or treating, Halloween-themed animal fun, and the chance for little ones to dress up in their costumes for this special visit to the zoo.
