Woman Dies Weeks After Rescue From Car Submerged In Indy Pond
Indianapolis Fire Dept. officials say Carol D. Perkins has died after being hospitalized in critical condition since New Year's Eve rescue.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN -- The Indianapolis Fire Department says the woman at the center of an apartment complex retention pond rescue on New Year's Day has died. IFD officials say 49-year-old Carol D. Perkins has been in critical condition at Eskenazi Hospital since the night of the tragic accident, where her car broke through the pond's ice, completely submerging with her inside of it. IFD reports the news of her Tuesday night passing "with deep sadness," saying:
"Despite the aggressive and quick actions by firefighters who rescued Carol and the professional medical care she received at Sydney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital, Carol succumbed to her injuries last night around 10:00 p.m. Prior to Carol’s passing, the family worked with hospital staff to ensure organ donation occurred - which was successful. Carol has worked as a nurse for the last 10 years. The family wishes to thank the firefighters who performed Carol’s rescue and to all medical personnel who had a hand in Carol’s medical care. They are grateful that she was given the best chance for survival and that she will help others through her organ donation. They appreciate knowing how many in the city were praying for her and hoping for a better outcome."
