📰 News we're reading

• St. Joseph County Democrats file lawsuit against election board (southbendtribune.com) — In South Bend, the St. Joseph County Democratic Party has sued the county Election Board and Clerk after four Democratic candidates were left off the certified 2026 ballot. Democrats argue the Republican-majority board exceeded its authority and violated Indiana's Open Door Law when it kept refiled candidates for county and small-town offices off the ballot, a dispute now headed to court.

• Causes and effects of extremely active severe weather year (abc57.com) — South Bend and the broader Michiana area have already shattered records for severe weather reports this year, with more than 820 local storm reports in just nine months. A National Weather Service meteorologist explains how persistent humidity, storm tracks around a "Ring of Fire," and possibly El Niño have fueled repeated intense storms, and urges residents to use multiple alert methods to stay safe.

• Eye on Health: Couplet Care keeps families and babies closer during NICU stay (wsbt.com) — Families delivering at Memorial Hospital of South Bend now benefit from Couplet Care, which lets medically stable moms and NICU babies stay together in single-family rooms. Beacon's coordinated team across Memorial and Elkhart General says this setup shortens hospital stays, improves bonding, and keeps parents involved around the clock in their newborns' specialized care.
