1. From the Seed Up: Transforming Indigenous African Vegetables to Improve Outcomes and Nutrition (iastate.edu) — Ames residents are invited to Iowa State University's Norman Borlaug Lecture on Oct. 20, featuring award-winning plant breeder Pamela Afokpe discussing how improved indigenous African vegetables boost farmer incomes and nutrition. The evening includes public poster sessions, a reception hosted by ISU President and Ames native David Cook, and a recording that will be available online afterward for those who can't attend.
   

2. Investigation opened after 18-year-old found seriously injured in Ames (who13.com) — An 18-year-old man was found with serious injuries at the Kappa Sigma property on Ash Avenue in Ames and flown to Iowa Methodist Medical Center, prompting a police investigation. Ames police are asking anyone who saw or knows anything about what happened to call their main line, anonymous tip line, or Crime Stoppers as they work to determine how he was hurt.
   

3. Wayshawn Parker scores 3 TDs as No. 15 Utah holds off Iowa State (statenews.net) — Iowa State football fell 31–17 to No. 15 Utah in a home game played in Ames, where Utah's Wayshawn Parker racked up three touchdowns and 239 total yards. The Cyclones rallied from a 24–3 halftime deficit to pull within one score in the fourth quarter before Utah sealed the win with a late touchdown and interception.
   

4. Abby Boysen Hired as Regional Director for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach (rcreader.com) — A new Iowa State University Extension and Outreach regional director has been appointed in a role based out of Ames, overseeing programs in Clinton, Muscatine, and Scott counties starting October 1. While her work focuses on eastern Iowa, it reflects ISU's broader outreach mission that many Ames residents support and engage with through campus and Extension activities.
   

5. Best colleges in Iowa (southernminn.com) — Students in Ames will be interested to see a local college ranked among the best four-year schools in Iowa, with an A grade and relatively high acceptance rate. The statewide list, based on Niche's 2027 rankings, compares campuses on tuition, selectivity, test scores, and graduation rates to help families weigh options close to home and across Iowa.
