📰 News we're reading

1. Ames City Council to discuss property tax impacts, data center Tuesday (iowastatedaily.com) — Ames residents should know the City Council meets Tuesday at 6 p.m. to review property tax and incentive changes, a proposed data center study committee, and progress on the Climate Action Plan. Council members will also weigh alley recycling options, building and fire code updates, and appointing an interim city attorney, decisions that could affect daily life across Ames.

2. Keep Funds Flowing: SRF eases financial burden on Iowa community (awwa.org) — Ames leaders used a low-interest State Revolving Fund loan to build a modern $75 million water treatment plant without shocking residents' bills. The upgraded facility, opened in 2017, expanded capacity, improved reliability, earned LEED certification, and helped Ames keep its award-winning tap water while spreading out rate increases over time.

3. 801 Day: A day in the life of Iowa State police officers (iowastatedaily.com) — Iowa State University police spent 801 Day patrolling campus and nearby Ames streets, focusing on student safety rather than writing tickets. From Starbucks chats on Lincoln Way to transporting an intoxicated student through the Ames Intermodal Facility to Story County Jail, officers emphasized education, accountability and building trust with the Ames and ISU community.

4. Iowa State's Seed Science Center offers help for hurricane relief in Jamaica (who13.com) — Researchers at Iowa State's Seed Science Center in Ames quietly played a crucial role in getting safe vegetable seeds to Jamaican farmers rebuilding after Hurricane Melissa. By donating specialized testing work at no cost, the Ames lab cleared Vermont-grown seeds for export, helping restore local food production and showcasing how a campus resource here can drive global disaster recovery.

5. Lela Marie Creswick (newtondailynews.com) — Family and friends are mourning 37-year-old Lela Marie Creswick, who was born in Ames and later lived in Indianola before passing away on August 19. Services and visitation are planned in Newton later this week, and her family suggests memorials to the Animal Rescue League or local shelters in honor of her creativity, kindness, and love for animals.
