📰 News we're reading

1. Accumold to Expand Production Capabilities With New Building (mpo-mag.com) — Ankeny's Accumold is launching a $33.25 million expansion that will nearly double its production capacity and create about 150 new jobs at its local campus. The new tornado-hardened building will add advanced equipment, quality and tooling space, and offices, reinforcing Ankeny's role as the company's global manufacturing hub and offering fresh career opportunities for area residents.

2. Polk County to construct safer trail crossing one year after deadly crash (kcci.com) — Polk County is adding a safer crossing, flashing beacons, and other upgrades at a High Trestle Trail road crossing after a cyclist's death, a change Ankeny riders have been urging. Local cyclists say the improvements will help but still want added measures like rumble strips as traffic grows between Ankeny and rural areas.

3. USA Today's top 25 Iowa high school volleyball teams at midseason (press-citizen.com) — Ankeny's volleyball teams are standing out in the latest midseason rankings, with the Hawks leading Class 5A in both assists and kills and Ankeny Centennial also drawing attention. The statewide list highlights how several central Iowa programs, including opponents Ankeny has faced, are positioning themselves for deep postseason runs as the regular season winds down.

4. Families call for change after two deaths at rural Bondurant intersection (who13.com) — Families, including relatives of 19-year-old Ankeny resident Samantha Moore, are pushing for safety changes at a rural Bondurant intersection where two people have died since May. After thousands signed a petition, Polk County plans a traffic safety study, while loved ones continue urging quick action so no one else loses a family member there.

5. Can a 'prairie populist' Democrat win Iowa? Josh Turek is betting on it. (qctimes.com) — A U.S. Senate campaign swing recently brought Democratic candidate Josh Turek to a local Ankeny farm, where he met with residents as part of his statewide tour. The race to replace retiring Sen. Joni Ernst is heating up, with Turek pitching himself as a "prairie populist" alternative to Republican Ashley Hinson ahead of the November election.
