Iowa City creates $1.8M endowment to promote public arts access (press-citizen.com) — Iowa City has approved a new $1.8 million Endowment for the Arts to provide long-term, sales-tax-funded support for key local cultural institutions. Over the next several years, groups like Summer of the Arts, the Englert, Riverside Theatre, Public Space One, FilmScene, and the UNESCO City of Literature will receive more predictable grants as the city gradually shifts support away from its general fund.

Iowa City Police Chief wants regular patrol of Ped Mall (1630kcjj.com) — Iowa City's police chief is pushing for a permanent squad to walk the Ped Mall, citing a concentration of violent crime and recent shootings downtown. Health Sciences Summer Experience opens pathways to careers in health care (iowa.gov) — A week-long Health Sciences Summer Experience at the University of Iowa's Iowa City campus brought 69 GEAR UP Iowa students to explore hands-on careers in medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, public health, and biomedical engineering. Participants lived in dorms, met faculty and mentors, and built personalized roadmaps that connect their current high school work to realistic health care paths after graduation.
   

4. Iowa City couple faces decades in prison for operating unlicensed dog breeding facility (1630kcjj.com) — Two Iowa City residents have been arrested after authorities say a July search of their Taft Avenue home uncovered an unlicensed dog breeding operation with dozens of underfed animals living in filthy conditions. Investigators seized 32 dogs, three of which were later euthanized, and the pair now face multiple animal neglect and torture charges that could bring very long prison sentences if convicted.
   

5. Iowa basketball releases full 2026-27 nonconference schedule (usatoday.com) — Iowa basketball's 2026–27 nonconference slate includes several home games in Iowa City at Carver-Hawkeye Arena, starting with Lipscomb on Nov. 3 and Eastern Illinois on Nov. 6. The Hawkeyes will also host Iowa State and other opponents, plus play neutral-site games in Des Moines and Sioux City and one road trip to Xavier. Exact tipoff times and TV details will come later.
