Wichita HVAC companies see surge in calls as temperatures repeatedly top 100 degrees (kwch.com) — With Wichita temperatures topping 100 degrees again, local HVAC companies are fielding hundreds of emergency calls as air conditioners fail under prolonged heat. One Wichita homeowner went an entire weekend without cooling before technicians from Dan's Heating and Cooling replaced an overheated contactor, and the company expects heavy demand to continue until the area finally cools down. 
2. Community rallies to support Wichita's 'Elote Man' during surgery recovery (kwch.com) — Neighbors in Wichita's Nomar District are rallying around beloved street vendor Don Alberto "Elote Man" Quezada as he recovers from surgery and can't work. Friends are organizing a fundraiser and planning an Oct. 25 elote event at Empower in Nomar to support his family and help him return to his usual 21st and Waco corner with an easier-to-move cart.
3. Wichita's St. Philip Neri Seminary opens to train future priests across three dioceses (foxkansas.com) — Wichita is now home to the newly established St. Philip Neri Seminary, created from the longtime St. Joseph House of Formation at the downtown Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The seminary will train future priests from the Wichita, Dodge City, and Salina dioceses, with 31 of the diocese's 50 seminarians set to attend.
4. Work starts this week on resurfacing stretch of highway near Wichita (ksn.com) — Drivers in south-central Kansas should expect delays this week as KDOT starts resurfacing K-42 from K-2 in Sumner County to 71st Street in Sedgwick County, just outside Wichita. Traffic will be guided by flaggers and a pilot car during daylight hours, and Wichita's Pearson Construction is handling the $2.5 million project through late November, weather permitting.
5. Breckenridge-Sterling, Gooch Named to North High Hall of Fame (communityvoiceks.com) — Wichita North High is honoring seven alumni this fall, including Community Voice publisher Bonita Gooch and Wichita-born billionaire Phil Ruffin, in its 2026 Hall of Fame class. The Oct. 3 induction at North High is part of Alumni Weekend, celebrating graduates whose work has shaped Wichita media, business, education and beyond.
