Board of County Commissioners
- Brandi Baily, County Treasurer elect, was sworn into office during the Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) meeting opening by Division 11 Judge Quentin Pittman. She will begin her new role on Tuesday, Oct. 12.
- The BoCC approved meeting minutes for Sept. 8, 15 and 22.
- A proclamation was adopted declaring Oct. 10-16, 2021 as Police Week. Sheriff Jeff Easter accepted the proclamation on behalf of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office.
- The BoCC approved a resolution removing Neil Fogg from the District Five Citizens Advisory Board.
- The BoCC approved a resolution accepting the resignation of Valarie White from the District One Citizens Advisory Board.
- A resolution was approved to appoint Steve Vossman to the Metropolitan Area Building & Construction Department (MABCD) Board of Electrical Appeals in the Joint Public-At-Large position.
- A resolution was approved to reappoint Casey Belknap, Duane Schneider and Christopher Vail to the MABCD Board of Electrical Appeals in their various positions.
- A resolution was approved to reappoint Chief Darrell Atteberry to the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center Advisory Board as recommended by Dr. Shelly Steadman. He was sworn in by Sedgwick County Clerk Kelly Arnold.
- A resolution was approved reappointing Dr. Ronald Varner to the Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center Advisory Board as recommended by Dr. Shelly Steadman.
- A resolution was approved to reappoint Commissioner Cruse and Commissioner Howell to the Chief Elected Officials Board.
- Brent Shelton, Deputy CFO presented a request for $150,000 to support the Workforce of the Future Project by Deloitte. Jeff Fluhr, president of Greater Wichita Partnership, shared that the project scope is to research how current jobs are evolving and understand jobs of the future. Keith Lawing, CEO of Workforce Alliance of South Central Kansas, Dr. Sheree Utash, President of WSU Tech and VP of Workforce Development for WSU and Scott Schwindaman, Interim President & CEO of Wichita Regional Chamber, shared how this partnership would benefit current businesses, the education field and the future workforce. The Workforce of the Future Project by Deloitte is a 12-week process that will provide a roadmap for Education, Business and Industry. Commissioners approved the funding request as presented.
- Commissioners acknowledged a donation of over 600 books made by several county departments to the Department of Corrections.
- Commissioners approved to adopt the findings of the Metropolitan Area Planning Commission (MAPC) and authorize the resolution of CON2021 00034 regarding county conditional use for vehicle storage yard to be published.
- Commissioners approved to adopt the findings of the MAPC and authorize the resolution of CON2021 00036 regarding county conditional use to permit a temporary rock crusher to be published.
- The BoCC approved a resolution creating new Sedgwick County Personnel Policies and Procedures regarding dispute resolution and a resolution creating new Sedgwick County Personnel Policies and Procedures regarding the Employee Code of Ethics.
- Commissioners approved the recommendation from the Board of Bids and Contracts regular Meeting on Sept. 30, 2021.
- The BoCC recessed the regular meeting and called to order the Fire District 1 meeting. Commissioners approved Fire District 1 meeting minutes for Aug. 5, 18, 25 and Sept. 8. They also approved consent agenda that included a resolution creating new Sedgwick County Personnel Policies and Procedures regarding dispute resolution and a resolution creating new Sedgwick County Personnel Policies and Procedures regarding the Employee Code of Ethics.
- The BoCC recessed at 11:25 a.m. so Commissioners could attend the Greater Wichita Partnership Quarterly Investor Meeting. They reconvened at 2:03 p.m.
- Commissioners went into Executive Session at 2:04 p.m. and 2:35 p.m. No binding action was taken following Executive Session.
Upcoming Events
- Sedgwick County Zoo is hosting Wild Lights. Oct. 1 through Dec. 5, larger-than-life Asian lantern sculptures will light up the Zoo. Tickets are on sale now at https://www.scz.org/event/wild-lights.
- The 20th Annual Kansas Fallen Firefighters Memorial will be held Sunday, Oct. 10, 2021 at 1:30 p.m. at the Kansas Firefighters Museum at 1300 S. Broadway.
- Sedgwick County Offices will be closed Monday, Oct. 11, 2021 in observance of Columbus Day.
- There will be no Board of County Commissioners meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 13, 2021.
- A ceremony honoring Sedgwick County law enforcement officers who have fallen in the line of duty is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Oct. 15, 2021 at the Law Enforcement Memorial located on the southwest corner of Central and Main Street, weather permitting.
- The Vietnam Moving Wall will be in Valley Center Oct. 21-25. The Sedgwick County Register of Deeds Office will be onsite issuing cards and filing DD214’s on Friday, Oct. 22 and Saturday, Oct. 23. - The Annual Veteran’s Day Parade will be held Saturday, Nov. 6, 2021 beginning in front of the Sedgwick County Courthouse promptly at 11 a.m.
- Sedgwick County residents can request a bulky waste coupon that allows them to dispose of up to 1,000 pounds of bulky waste at no cost. This coupon is good now through Nov. 24. To get your coupon, visit org/environment.
- The U.S. Department of Agriculture opened an application portal for food/agriculture producers, distributors, and more who may request between $1,500 - 20,000 to support health safety of workers and business environments during COVID-19 pandemic. https://usda-prs.grantsolutions.gov/usda.
