Here are the top stories today in Baton Rouge:

  1. An 11-year-old died in a car crash on Joor Road on Saturday night. According to Louisiana State Police, 18-year-old Derick Jones was driving north around 10 p.m. with two passengers when the vehicle left the road and entered a nearby canal. 11-year-old Julian Jones was taken to a hospital and died of his injuries, while the second passenger was also taken to the hospital; Derick Jones was not injured in the crash.   2. Investigators are hopeful that new evidence found in the cold case of a Grand Isle man missing since 1984 can solve a decades-old mystery. A team of forensic investigators from Louisiana State University said it has helped identify the remains of 58-year-old Lester Rome, who was reported missing to Jefferson Parish authorities on Jan. 9, 1984. Over two decades after skeletal remains were discovered in a homeowner's well, experts at LSU was able to retrieve additional bones as well as several items that became essential to cracking the case.   3. Firefighters were called to put out a blaze at the Georgia-Pacific paper mill in East Baton Rouge on Friday. (WBRZ)
  4. The Baton Rouge Gallery's annual KINETICS art auction is back, with online bids starting Nov. 2. (The Advocate)
  5. Unvaccinated employees of Ochsner LSU Health will have their compliance deadline deferred while the company appeals to the Louisiana Supreme Court. (KATC Lafayette News)
