Here are the top three stories today in Baton Rouge:
- Teachers and support staff with the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board will be receiving an extra payment in April. The bonus checks will be $1,200 to educators and $600 to support workers, with a likely cost of $7 million for the school district. According to Superintendent Sito Narcisse, the payments are a way for the district to compensate teachers ahead of a planned salary study, which will likely raise salaries for many groups of district employees. (U.S. News & World Report)
- A standoff led to the arrest of a burglary suspect on Friday morning. The incident occurred on the 3500 block of Winbourne Avenue when the suspect refused to leave their residence. No additional details have been released related to the ongoing case or whether or not nearby Istrouma High School went into lockdown as a precaution. (The Advocate)
- Baton Rouge Carnival season has returned with record-breaking crowds. The parade season brings floats, beads, and marching bands to the Baton Rouge streets in celebration of Mardi Gras. Local law enforcement has provided a bigger presence in response to the record-setting crowds in an effort to keep the community safe. (WBRZ)
