Eleven LSU Seniors to Graduate with Engaged Citizen Distinction

The Center for Community Engagement, Learning, and Leadership, or CCELL, in conjunction with LSU Campus Life, is pleased to announce its spring 2022 cohort of 11 seniors that will graduate from LSU next week with the Engaged Citizen distinction.

Collectively, these spring 2022 graduates have earned 138 service-learning credit hours and have volunteered approximately 978 hours across their local communities during their academic tenure at LSU. Some of this cohort’s volunteer opportunities include work with campus entities such as Campus Life's Food Pantry and the Office of Multicultural Affairs Genesis Mentoring Program.

Individual community engagement includes working with off campus organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, St. Joseph’s Hospice, Volunteers in Public Schools and the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired and Deaf.

“We are so excited to see students from the Midwest, Louisiana and Texas complete their undergraduate degrees with the Engaged Citizen distinction this semester. They have gone above and beyond to contribute to and learn from a wide set of communities other than those they originate from. I have no doubt they will continue to do so, post-graduation,” said Director of CCELL Sarah Becker.

CCELL and LSU Campus Life established the Engaged Citizen Program to support and recognize the accomplishments of undergraduate students who engage significantly with their communities to address critical community needs. Any undergraduate student can apply to be a part of the program.

“The service these students offered others through challenging times is an incredible testament to their readiness for serving as engaged LSU alumni. We are proud of them and thankful they chose to lead and serve as LSU students,” said Associate Dean of Students and Director of LSU Campus Life Jacob Brumfield.

To earn this distinction, the students must meet the high standards of the Engaged Citizen Program. Special requirements for this semester’s cohort include completion of a minimum of seven credit hours of service-learning designated coursework, a minimum of 100 hours of community service with approved organizations, and a reflective paper detailing how the work fulfills LSU’s commitment to community.
