Here are the top three stories today in Baton Rouge:
- A chemist from LSU and her research team have discovered a promising new treatment for triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), a particularly aggressive form with limited treatment options. LSU Chemistry Assistant Professor Fatima Rivas and her colleague, Associate Professor Michelle M. Martínez Montemayor from the Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine, have developed a mushroom-derived compound called Erperox. The compound specifically targets TNBC models without inducing cytotoxicity in healthy tissue. (KALB News)
- After a year off due to COVID, the big Spanish Town Mardis Gras came back bigger than ever this Saturday. The adult-oriented ball featured a sea of pink flamingos, live music, dancing, and guests in colorful attire. This year's ball was completely sold out, with 3,500 people in attendance. (WBRZ)
- Baton Rouge Fire Department officials are investigating an arson case involving a vacant house fire. When firefighters arrived on the scene on Friday evening, they discovered on the front porch and front rooms of the home. An investigator ruled that the fire was intentionally set; anyone with information about this fire is asked to contact Crimestoppers or Baton Rouge Fire Investigators. (WAFB)
