(nola.com) — New state laws cracking down on unlabeled and unsafe imported seafood could directly affect shrimpers working out of Buras, including how their local catch competes with cheaper foreign products. Lawmakers have boosted the Agriculture Department’s power to seize bad imports, required restaurants and grocers to keep seafood invoices, and created penalties for mixing foreign and local shrimp without clear labeling, all aimed at protecting Louisiana’s coastal fishing communities.
