🌱 Homer Plessy's Pardon + Increasing Homicide Rate
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in New Orleans.
Hey, people of New Orleans! It's me again, Shannon Denney, your host of the New Orleans Daily.
First, today's weather:
Sunny. High: 57 Low: 47.
Here are the top four stories today in New Orleans:
- Nearing the 125th anniversary of Homer Plessy's arrest for being black and on a whites-only train car, a case that made it to the Supreme court trying to combat Jim Crow laws, Homer Plessy has received a posthumous gubernatorial pardon. (Louisiana Weekly)
- Across Louisiana, police departments have been struggling to keep up with the increasing murder rate nationwide. NOPD solved less than 1/3 of its cases in 2020 and the end of 2021 marked the highest number of homicides since the population drop of Katrina. (Louisiana Weekly)
- In a carjacking turned kidnapping, a woman had left her young son sleeping in her car while going to pick up take-out when her car was stolen with the child inside. The car was abandoned nearby with the child safely inside but NOPD is still pursuing suspects. (Mid-City Messenger)
- On Friday, a man was tragically killed in a two-car accident. While he was tending to his broken vehicle on the side of the highway, another driver collided with him and his vehicle. (WDSU New Orleans)
