📰 News we're reading

1. $15 million project underway to boost business in New Orleans East (wdsu.com) — A $15 million privately funded retail development is rising at Chef Menteur Highway and Crowder Boulevard in New Orleans East, bringing a large gas station, national chains, and local restaurants. Developer Troy Henry aims to open the station by Halloween and a food court by Thanksgiving, hoping the project jumpstarts more long-needed business growth in eastern New Orleans.

2. New Orleans' Municipal Complex at the end of its 'useful lifespan,' architects say. What's next? (nola.com) — New Orleans' aging City Hall and Civil District Court complex may be demolished or relocated, with architects warning the nearly 70-year-old buildings have outlived their usefulness and replacement costs could reach $326 million. A mayor-appointed advisory committee is weighing renovation, full rebuild, or moving city and court functions, with seven more public meetings before a January 12 recommendation deadline, including one on September 1 at Union Passenger Terminal.

3. Hired drivers can now charge $1 more per trip in New Orleans (fox8live.com) — If you take taxis or rideshares in New Orleans, expect a new $1 fuel surcharge on each passenger trip after City Council approval. Drivers say the temporary fee, set to expire at year's end unless renewed, will help offset months of high gas and insurance costs squeezing their livelihoods.

4. New Orleans Jewish community responds to Ye concert at Caesars Superdome (wdsu.com) — Jewish organizations and synagogue leaders in New Orleans are working with Caesars Superdome management and local law enforcement ahead of Ye's Aug. 28 concert to ensure antisemitic songs, rhetoric, and merchandise are barred. The venue's operator, Legends Global, has agreed to contractual safeguards, staff training with the ADL, and ongoing monitoring so the show aligns with a zero-tolerance policy on hate speech.

5. State leaders push back against $800M tax rebates for proposed New Orleans hotel (wwltv.com) — A 27-story Omni hotel next to the New Orleans Convention Center is stalled as state leaders balk at more than $800 million in proposed tax rebates over 30 years. The New Orleans City Council has advanced zoning but faces backlash over incentives while state bond commissioners delay a vote, leaving the project's financing, timeline, and potential Super Bowl bids in limbo.
