📰 News we're reading

• Men from Shreveport, Bossier City get federal sentences in case related to drugs, firearms (shreveportbossieradvocate.com) — Federal prosecutors say a 23-year-old Shreveport man and a 23-year-old Bossier City man have received multi-year prison sentences after officers responding to a disturbance recovered marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and a handgun. The same federal court has also indicted a Shreveport woman and others in a separate investigation into alleged fraud involving COVID-era business loans, underscoring ongoing enforcement activity in the area.

• New vaccine shows promise in treating melanoma patients (ksla.com) — Shreveport-area doctors are testing a personalized melanoma vaccine that, when combined with the drug Keytruda, has boosted five-year survival rates by nearly half in clinical trials. The mRNA-based shot is built from each patient's tumor mutations, but it's not yet FDA-approved or available. Local oncologists also stress avoiding tanning beds as a key way to cut melanoma risk.

• Cement Kiln Carbon Negative Future Mapped in ETH Zurich Life-Cycle Study (thedogoodpress.com) — A new carbon removal facility planned at the Port of Caddo-Bossier near Shreveport could start operating in 2026, aiming to capture 17,000 tonnes of CO2 a year. Researchers from ETH Zurich say pairing this kind of plant with electrified cement kilns could actually pull more carbon from the air than it emits, though success depends heavily on access to very clean electricity.
