Augusta Police Thank Public After Missing Girl Found Safe

A 3-year-old Augusta girl went missing Monday, triggering an Amber Alert and a search involving "hundreds" of investigators.

AUGUSTA, ME β€” Augusta police thanked the public for their "overwhelming" support after a 3-year-old city girl went missing Monday, triggering an Amber Alert. The child was returned to the police station safe and sound Tuesday night. Authorities said she was in the company of several people. Police did not identify those individuals as they continued their investigation into the case Wednesday. No arrests were announced.

"I can't tell you how relieved we are she is safe," Deputy police Chief Jared Mills said in a news conference Tuesday.

Police said the girl went missing from her Sewall Street residence Monday night after her mother was involved in a "medical emergency." During the period she was missing, the girl may have been with a 26-year-old Augusta woman, police said at the time.
