📰 News we're reading

1. Hearts of Pine allow another stoppage time goal in loss to AC Boise (pressherald.com) — Portland's Hearts of Pine suffered yet another heartbreaking stoppage-time goal at Fitzpatrick Stadium, falling 2-1 to AC Boise and continuing a season-long pattern of late collapses. In front of a sellout home crowd, the USL League One side again surrendered points in the final minutes, leaving fans and players frustrated as the already-eliminated club looks to finish its season with pride.

2. Yarmouth is on a mission to add more affordable housing (mainebiz.biz subscription) — Just 15 minutes north of Portland, Yarmouth has broken ground on 18 new affordable one-bedroom apartments aimed at workers like teachers, firefighters, and town staff who are being priced out of the region. Rents will target households earning up to 80% of the greater Portland area median income, and town leaders hope this village-center project will be the first of several steps to ease the area's severe housing crunch.

3. Maine CDC report: Long-term benzene levels in parts of South Portland were double state's guideline (wmtw.com) — South Portland residents are facing long-term benzene levels around petroleum tank terminals that exceed Maine's guideline, with one Citgo site measured at double the acceptable risk. State health and environmental officials will brief the Portland City Council on Oct. 27, outlining six years of monitoring, potential health impacts, and how nearby neighborhoods may be affected.

4. Trump-Epstein bookmobile brings printed Epstein files to Maine (wgme.com) — A bookmobile packed with thousands of printed Jeffrey Epstein case documents is based in Portland this weekend as it tours Maine from Lewiston to Biddeford. Organizers and survivors say the rolling archive is meant to keep pressure on for full file releases and institutional accountability, drawing attention from political candidates while emphasizing support for victims over partisanship.
