📰 News we're reading
• Wells EMS settles federal Medicare fraud case brought by whistleblower for nearly $340K (seacoastonline.com) — Wells residents should know that Wells Emergency Medical Services has agreed to pay nearly $340,000 to settle federal and state allegations of Medicare overbilling, without admitting liability. Town-appointed board members and their attorney say the nonprofit, partially funded by Wells, has changed practices and secured insurance coverage for part of the payment, aiming to prevent similar issues while maintaining 24/7 ambulance service.

• Wells passes mobile home rent moratorium, sends issue to voters in November (pressherald.com) — Wells officials have temporarily frozen mobile home lot rent increases and will ask voters in November whether to adopt a longer-term rent stabilization ordinance. At a packed Town Hall hearing, residents also weighed in on a proposed data center moratorium headed to the ballot and on pausing work on new short-term rental rules until clearer language is developed.

• Mega Millions drawing produces a big winner in Maine (wmtw.com) — Maine's lottery luck now includes a recent $50,000 Powerball ticket sold at Wells Super Food Market in Wells, adding to several big wins statewide. While the latest Mega Millions prize went to a Fort Kent buyer, Wells residents might want to double-check any tickets they bought earlier in August and keep an eye on growing jackpots.
