This MD City Is Paying Families $20K To Move There

The moving package includes $10,000 cash plus another $10,000 for renovations or a down payment on a new home if you move to this MD town.

CUMBERLAND, MD — A western Maryland town is reaching into its wallet in an effort to attract new residents.

The city of Cumberland, located in Allegany County, has launched what it calls a relocation pilot program to entice families to move there. If they do, the city will pay them $20,000.

The relocation package includes $10,000 in cash and an additional $10,000 for approved renovations on an existing home or for a down payment on a newly built home within city limits.

In addition to the cash, residents can enjoy "a diverse, friendly, small-town community located in a historic setting," according to the city. Officials also note the city's lower cost of living, and outdoor recreation and cultural opportunities as benefits.

There is a catch. Any new resident participating in the program must purchase a home and live in it as their primary residence for no less than five years. If they fail to meet the requirement, residents will be required to pay back the $20,000.
