Several Hospitalized After Severe MD Storms Knock Out Power, Trees & Close Schools

Thousands of Maryland residents remain without power Friday after overnight storms brought down trees and knocked out electrical lines, forcing even some schools to close.

Marylanders were under a severe thunderstorm watch on Thursday that ran through 2 a.m. Friday as forecasters warned of lightning, heavy rain, and strong winds capable of producing damaging wind gusts.

The latest figures released by the BGE and Pepco utilities show that most outages are being felt in Anne Arundel and Prince George's counties, as well as in Washington, D.C.

The severity of the outages forced Prince George's County Public Schools to close completely on Friday after 34 of its schools and facilities were without electricity.

Also canceled by PGCPS were all athletic practices and games, which will be rescheduled at a later date, according to the district.

In Anne Arundel County, the school district announced that four of its schools would be closed because of the outages.

Those schools included: Carrie Weedon Early Education Center, Shady Side and West Annapolis elementary schools, and Southern High School.

Damages + Injuries Caused By Storms

In Prince George's County, a boy was hospitalized after becoming trapped inside a Kettering home on the 300 block of Wren Court.

Photos shared by the Prince George's County Fire/EMS Department showed a large tree that crashed onto the home.

One image captured a bed covered with debris as pieces of the home's roof poked into a mattress.

Over in Baltimore County, at least three people were taken to the hospital after a tree fell onto an MTA bus in Reisterstown early Friday.

The Baltimore County Fire Department said the incident occurred in the 300 block of Main Street and warned that residents should expect delays due to storm damage.

Another Storm Threat?

The National Weather Service warns that another round of storms could impact Marylanders heading into Labor Day weekend.

A weather outlook issued by the agency states scattered severe thunderstorms could develop Friday after 5 p.m., bringing another dose of damaging wind gusts during the afternoon commute.

However, the current chance of precipitation stands at 30%, before rising to 40% for a round of overnight storms.

A chance for rainstorms returns Saturday, between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m., according to the NWS.
