The popular brand officially returned to Maryland in November 2025, when it opened a 7,000-square-foot flagship store at Arundel Mills in Hanover. It also operates a smaller presence inside Macy's stores, including at Westfield Montgomery and Wheaton malls.

The standalone opening in Montgomery County, however, is notable: the brand first arrived in the county in the late 1950s, opening its inaugural location in Rockville.

A Toy Giant's Return

Toys "R" Us filed for bankruptcy in 2018 and eventually closed or sold all 735 locations nationwide. The bankruptcy filing came amid slumping sales and debt that reached about $5 billion. The chain has faced increasing competition from Amazon, Walmart and Target.

A small number of shops eventually reopened in partnership with Macy's, but in September, the company announced a more comprehensive comeback: 120 new stores to add to the 40 standalone locations in the country.

Part of the Toys "R" Us relaunch includes a focus on adults and the content creator ecosystem, with some locations launching "Creator Studios," described as dedicated spaces where influencers, creators and toy brands can create content, unveil new products and host toy reveals or other events. Select stores will also feature candy shops and cafés.
