MD 'Lost A Great Statesman,' Mayor Buckley Says Of Late Sen. Sarbanes

Mayor Gavin Buckley: “Marylanders Lost a Great Statesman in Sen. Sarbanes. He Lived His Life in Service to Our State.”

“I was saddened to learn of the passing retired Sen. Paul Sarbanes on Sunday. He will be remembered as one of Maryland’s great public servants.

“Sen. Sarbanes’ story was such a quintessential American story. The son of Greek immigrants, he was born and raised in Wicomico County. After graduating from Princeton and earning a Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford, he returned to America to attend Harvard Law School. As if his academic pedigree wasn’t enough of a success story, he clerked for a Federal judge and entered private law practice in Baltimore before being elected to the House of Delegates in 1967.

“By the time of his retirement in 2007, Sarbanes was Maryland’s longest serving United States Senator (1977 to 2007). His son John now holds the seat that was once his entry to federally elected office, the Third Congressional District, which includes the City of Annapolis. Just like his father, Rep. John Sarbanes is a great friend to the City of Annapolis and her people.

On behalf of my wife Julie and our family as well as the residents and staff of the City of Annapolis, we pass our condolences to John, Michael and Janet, his grandchildren and extended family as well as his friends in all corners of the state and across America.”
