Library's Black History Month Events Explore Race, Culture, Books

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — The Anne Arundel County Public Library will host five events to celebrate February's Black History Month. The February happenings will feature historical, cultural and philosophical programs.

Interested attendees must register in advance for each offering, which will all take place on Zoom. The sign-up opens two weeks before each occasion listed below. Click each link to reserve your space.

Drumbeat for Change

• Feb. 4 at 6:30 p.m.
• Ages 6-10
• Author Kelly Starling Lyons will share two of her picture books that explain how kids can make a difference.

Freedom Bound: Runaways of the Chesapeake

• Feb. 10 at 6 p.m.
• Ages 6-10
• An interactive virtual tour will tell the tales of runaway slaves from Maryland.

Generations: Music and The Black Family Concert:

• Feb. 18 at 7 p.m.
• Adults
• The library will host an hour of classical, folk and jazz music performed by Black musicians.

Black Representation Matters

• Feb. 20 at 2 p.m.
• Adults
• Attendees will discuss the importance of representing Black people in books and how to use literature to talk about race with children.

How To Be A Children's Book Author and Illustrator: One Artist's Journey

• Feb. 27 at 10 a.m.
• Ages 6-10
• Author and illustrator Don Tate will explain how he transitioned from a reserved reader to a renowned writer of children's books.
