Man Shot After Pointing Gun at Police

Anne Arundel County Police say a Pasadena man fired a handgun at officers, who returned fire, shooting the suspect in the leg.

A Pasadena man was shot and wounded by Anne Arundel County Police early Sunday after he reportedly pointed a handgun at officers responding to a report of a man with a gun in a neighborhood.

Police were called about 1 a.m. Sunday to the 900 block of Ninth Street in Pasadena on a report of a possibly intoxicated man armed with a handgun. Several officers converged on the area to search for the suspect, who was found near a garage in the area,

As officers approached the suspect -- identified as John Christopher Delich, 38, of the 900 block of Ninth Street in Pasadena – authorities say he pointed a handgun at officers. Witnesses say Delich fired his handgun at police, and three officers shot at the suspect, who suffered a leg wound.

The suspect retreated into the home and an hour-long standoff ensued. Police used an armored vehicle to approach the home. They saw Delich, who was suffering from a gunshot wound to his leg, and removed him from the home without incident.

Delich was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Hospital for treatment of his non-life threatening injuries. A loaded .40 caliber handgun was reportedly found near Delich in the house.

The Anne Arundel County Homicide Unit has assumed command of the investigation. Several witnesses were located and transported to the Criminal Investigation Division for interviews. Detectives are in the process of executing search warrants and searching for any evidence related to the investigation.

No officers or civilians other than Delich were injured during this incident.

Police have charged Delich with:

  • two counts of attempted second-degree murder
  • two counts of first-degree assault
  • two counts of second-degree assault
  • handgun on a person
  • firearm use/felony violent crime
  • two counts of reckless endangerment
  • two counts of second degree assault on law enforcement officer
  • fail to obey lawful order
  • disorderly conduct
