2 MD Tornadoes Confirmed During Monday Storms

The National Weather Service confirmed two tornadoes touched down in Maryland earlier this week.

MARYLAND — Two tornadoes touched down in Maryland this week after a severe band of storms hit the region.

The National Weather Service confirmed that an 80 mph tornado struck Carroll County, in New Windsor.

Rated an EF-0, the tornado traveled just over 1.5 miles after landing at 12:02 p.m. It measured at about 250 yards wide.

The agency said the storm's path of destruction led to a roof being pulled off an outdoor building.

A second tornado was traced to Caroline County. But, unlike the earlier event, the town of Ridgely saw an EF-1 twister.

The tornado brought 90 mph winds when it developed just before 10:30 p.m. The agency said the system traveled for 0.9 miles and was 250 yards wide.

Neither of the tornadoes led to any injuries.

Monday's storms put several counties under either a tornado watch or warning alert, in addition to flood warnings. Heavy rains prompted multiple road closures, including on major interstates 495 and 270.

The year's first tornado in the state was confirmed in Howard County during an earlier round of severe weather that impacted the region. That twister was rated an EF-1.
