Mom Who Says She Killed 2-Year-Old Because of 'Muslim Curse' in Court Friday

An Annapolis woman accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter and disposing of her body in a Dumpster should learn Friday if she is deemed competent to stand trial.

Chelsea Booth, 26, previously was found incompetent to face first-degree murder and first-degree child abuse charges for the death of her daughter, Kassidey, in February 2013, reports CapitalGazette.com.

Booth told Annapolis police her daughter was suffering from a “Muslim curse” placed on her by her father, according to court records. She also told police she believed an evil spirit possessed the child.

Annapolis police began investigating Booth in February of 2013 after receiving a tip that the daughter had not been seen in recent days and was abused, Patch earlier reported.

The toddler’s body was recovered the following night from more than 95 tons of refuse. Police said Booth admitted she killed her daughter and put her body in a Dumpster.

Detectives tracked the contents of the Dumpster to a refuse transition station in Maryland, where the contents were loaded onto rail cars for transport to a landfill out of state.

Booth first told officers Kassidey was with her father, Antwan Nelson, 28, in Baltimore, the Capital Gazette said. When police contacted Nelson, he said he hadn’t seen his daughter in months. During questioning Booth later admitted smothering the girl earlier that week by lying on top of her until she stopped breathing.

A month after her arrest, Booth was committed to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene for treatment and examination. She was found incompetent to stand trial last June. If she is found competent and ultimately convicted of the charges, Booth faces life in prison.
