Navy Ice Hockey Team Heads to National Championship

This is the first time the Naval Academy's ice hockey team has earned a bid in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division I National Tourney.

For the first time in its program's history, the Navy ice hockey team is headed to the National Championship.

The Midshipmen (28-4-1) clinched a No. 15 seed and will face No. 18 Rutgers University in the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division I National Tournament.

The first round of the tournament will be held at The Edge Ice Arena in Bensenville, IL, on March 1.

“The boys are stepping up and are ready to challenge the demands of play needed this weekend as they face these top ranked teams” said head coach Mike Fox in a release. “If they execute the plays well, we anticipate a favorable outcome; we are there to win.”

According to a release, Navy claimed its first bid to Nationals by virtue of a top 20 ranking and by becoming the regular season champions of the Eastern Collegiate Hockey Association.

At the beginning of the season the Midshipmen were ranked No. 24, but rose to as high as No. 11 in the coaches poll before settling into the No. 15 spot by the end of the regular season.

The team left Annapolis for Illinois on Thursday.
