ANNAPOLIS, MD — A new greeting card company opened recently in Annapolis. The online business, named Fluttr, sells customizable cards and ships them nationwide.

"Fluttr was born in a time when people felt disconnected from loved ones — and sometimes a text or an email is not enough," Founder and CEO Matthew Sarro said in an April 14 press release announcing the company's launch. "The greeting card industry has been slow to innovate and has not met the needs of the modern consumer."

The business offers hundreds of cards for all the major holidays. It also covers other occasions like Pride Month, Earth Day and Women's History Month.

Customers can choose from several designs for each occasion. Fluttr suggests three messages for each card or senders can write their own. Buyers can cap the card off with their own signature.

Users can send cards immediately or schedule them for future delivery. Fluttr prints, stamps and mails the cards. Customers can send the cards directly to the recipient or they can receive the card themselves to hand-deliver.

More than 50 artists design Fluttr's cards. This talent pipeline includes established artists and rising creators from around the country. Fluttr plans to eventually add international artists.

"My focus was around building our creative network," said Alyssa Peck, co-founder and executive creative director. "If we were going to create a greeting card company that stood out from the competition, we had to team up with the best, most talented group of artists we could find… and then treat them like true partners every step of the way."

One Fluttr artist, Mallory Wierzbicki, is from Annapolis. She specializes in "whimsical, clever and inclusive designs."

"Fluttr has influenced my growth as an artist," Wierzbicki said. "Not only has it helped me financially, but I've had an increase in social media followers who recognize and value my work as an artist. This is extremely gratifying, as I am self-taught and have built my business Stem & Soul from the ground up on my own."

This support encourages Wierzbicki because it offers hope to small artists. She applauds Fluttr's grassroots approach during a time of increasing corporate consolidation.

"In a world where many customers turn to Amazon and other big businesses, I like knowing that I am still supported by my local community thanks to Fluttr," Wierzbicki said.
