Perseid Meteor Shower Set for Best Show in 20 Years

Expect to be dazzled this week when the Perseid meteor shower hits its peak, with up to 150 "shooting stars" streaking across Maryland's skies this week.

In a typical year, observers under a clear dark sky can expect to see up to 100 meteors per hour. But the planet Jupiter recently nudged the debris from the Swift-Tuttle comet closer to Earth, which could mean up to 150 meteors per hour the night of Aug. 11-12. >>> Read more.

Main Street to Reopen This Week in Ellicott City

More than 300 people helped clean up downtown Ellicott City Sunday, according to Howard County Executive Allan Kittleman, who said access to Main Street would expand and constrict this week as the town continues recovering from flood damage.

The main artery through historic Ellicott City has been closed since Sunday, July 31, after Howard County experienced more than 6 inches of rain on Saturday, July 30. The flood killed two people and left roads, sidewalks and businesses battered in its wake. >>> Read more.
