Don't Change School Start Times Yet, Anne Arundel County Executive Says: WTOP

Schools are scheduled to have new start times this year, but WTOP said the Anne Arundel County executive wants to delay this change.

ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman wants to postpone this year's scheduled change in school start times, WTOP News reported Wednesday. Pittman thinks the shift would be challenging because of the ongoing bus driver shortage that caused cancelations and delays throughout the last school year. The county executive instead wants the new bell schedule to begin in the 2023 to 2024 school year, journalist Matt Small said.

"It’s going to be made worse by the school start times changing this year," Pittman said of the driver shortage, according to WTOP. "Because of the compression of when schools open and close, drivers won’t be able to drive as many routes."

Most Anne Arundel County Public Schools students return on Aug. 29 or Aug. 30. Classes are currently scheduled to start:

  • between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. in elementary schools
  • between 8:30 a.m. and 9:15 a.m. in middle schools
