Preventing Holiday Burglaries, Thefts: Police
The Annapolis Police Department is offering tips to help protect oneself from burglaries and thefts during the holiday season.
ANNAPOLIS, MD — The Annapolis Police Department hopes residents enjoy the holidays and take precautions to keep themselves free from burglaries and thefts. According to the department, burglars consider the holidays as an opportunity to steal cash, credit cards and gifts from homes. To prevent burglaries, the department recommends everyone lock all doors and windows, even if leaving for just a few minutes.
Also, do not leave a spare key to the home in an easily accessible spot. If traveling for the holidays, sign up with the U.S. Postal Service to have mail held, ask a neighbor to check on your house and use timers to turn lights on and off automatically while gone. After the holidays, do not put empty boxes from new electronics and expensive items on the curb for pickup.
"If possible, break down the boxes and put them inside your recycling container. Burglars love to know what expensive gifts you have inside your home for them to steal," the department stated.
