"Springtime means the start of the local golf season. Over the last year, many of the local golf courses in Anne Arundel County were packed because golf was an outdoor activity that could easily accommodate social distancing and the threat of spreading the virus was significantly reduced. In fact, data from the National Golf Foundation shows that the number of rounds played in 2020 were 15% to 20% higher than 2019.

This year looks like another big year for golf and the demand for tee times will be high. But there is some good news as a very popular golf course is coming back to life after several years of renovations.

The Eisenhower Golf Course, located about a mile outside of Annapolis, near Crownsville, is named after President Dwight D. Eisenhower who was an [avid] golfer. The course has undergone a $5 million renovation and changed its name to The Preserve at Eisenhower Golf Course.

The re-brand reflects not only Eisenhower serving the community as a championship golf course, but its goal to become a sanctuary for local wildlife. The Preserve at Eisenhower Golf Course embodies a golf course layout that promotes sustainability and eco-friendly maintenance practices, including stream preservation and showcasing [a] majestic natural setting.

The Chamber is excited to host the first golf outing at the newly renovated course on May 17th. There has been a great “buzz” about the course since a lot of people want to check out the new lay out. We have not even started to market the golf outing and we are getting calls. I think we will sell out. The cost will be $150 per player and lunch will be provided by Mission BBQ, I am sure General Eisenhower would approve!

The new layout followed an eco-friendly approach and was designed by golf course architect Andrew Green. The highlights include the removal of all bunkers and installation of Bermuda grass fairways and tee boxes requiring less water and chemical inputs. Green [was] also in charge of the recent renovations at the Congressional Country Club, so he is clearly a top notch designer.

The Preserve at Eisenhower Golf Course will have five sets of tees from 4,700 to 7,100 yards, which will satisfy golfers of all abilities as they get to experience the forestland and the numerous creeks and swales.

The renovation was [spearheaded] by the Anne Arundel County Government as part of its Watershed Protection and Restoration Program. The streams on the course were fortified and the new storm water management design will help with irrigation. Overall, the renovation will increase wetlands by more than 13 acres and bring additional wildlife to the area.

The course first opened in 1969 and was designed by renowned architect Ed Ault on more than 220 acres of splendidly wooded landscape. As the course re-opens, it will continue to be managed by Indigo Golf Partners who has been there for 22 years.
