Sidewalk Work to Begin Along Outer West Street

Work is scheduled to begin this weekend on a sidewalk restoration project along a two-mile stretch of outer West Street.

The State Highway Administration said work will begin at 9 p.m. Sunday, according to a release. The project is designed to improve pedestrian access with wider sidewalks that are fully compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act, according to the release.

Officials said work about the stretch from Solomons Island Road to Taylor Avenue at Westgate Circle should last at least nine months.

Part of the work also will include removing some utility pole “pinch points” to help keep pedestrians out of the street, according to the release.

Sunday’s work will begin on the section from Solomons Island Road to about Legion Avenue and last about two months.

Work is scheduled to be performed between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. to minimize the impact on traffic.

Later, work on the middle three-lane section will take place from 9 a.m.-3 p.m., but only during summer months when Anne Arundel County public schools are not in session.

The final phase will be in the two-lane section that ends at Westgate Circle and work will once again be scheduled between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Anchor Construction of Washington, DC, is the contractor on the $1.4 million project.

Officials said in the release that more than 30,000 vehicles a day pass through the intersection of West Street and Solomons Island Road and about 15,000 vehicles travel through Westgate Circle.
