Anne Arundel Deaf Man Wave Trains for Extreme Kayaking
Murdock Henderson age 48 and deaf since birth, continues his daily training on the Potomac to set Kayak record and raise awareness

Preparing for rough waters: Kayak wave training! “The idea is to go with the waves, or when they are against you to "ice pick" your way over each second, third, or fourth one depending on the height. At times, the waves can reach heights of up to 8 feet usually following a tropical storm,” Common conditions he is preparing for along the Amazon river, when he begins the Intaba Paddle for Deaf Education in 3 short weeks.

In July, Henderson will push off the shore of Pucallpa and do something few have ever done successfully—paddle the entire length of flatwater of the Amazon solo to Belem, Brazil. “The trek (pictured) down the Amazon is comparative to the lifestyles that most Deaf people worldwide endure—a constant swim upriver. Life shouldn’t be like that and one of the most powerful deterrents is to unlock the mind through educational opportunities,” comments Henderson. “I want to raise awareness and change the perception that many people have towards those who are disabled, especially those of who cannot hear, to one that is more focused on the characteristics that make us unique as Deaf people.”
