Anne Arundel Sees Most New Coronavirus Cases In Month
Coronavirus cases are surging in Anne Arundel County and across Maryland. The number of new cases is the highest it's been in a month.
ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — Anne Arundel County counted 78 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, the most recent data show. That was the most since June 15 when the county tallied a record-high 128 new cases.
New cases bottomed out at 10 on June 23. The county has confirmed 5,619 coronavirus cases and 203 related deaths.
Hospitalizations remain low, however. As of Thursday, coronavirus had 34 Anne Arundel County residents in the hospital.

That's down from the April 21 peak of 172 hospitalizations. Fewer than 50 people have been hospitalized at a time since June 14.
Anne Arundel County has the fifth most confirmed coronavirus cases in the state, according to the latest data from the Maryland Department of Health. Prince George's County has the most cases, with 20,302. Montgomery County's 16,153 cases give it the second-most cases.

Baltimore County and Baltimore City round out the top four jurisdictions, respectively. Both have more than 9,000 cases of coronavirus.
More than 76,000 Marylanders have tested positive for coronavirus. The virus has killed 3,227 people in the state.
While Maryland has seen decreased positivity rates and increased testing, the number of new daily cases is trending slightly upward. The state reported 756 new cases of coronavirus on Wednesday, the largest jump in more than a month.
On Friday, Maryland clocked 707 new cases. This time last week, that number was 463. New daily cases topped out at 1,784 on May 19 and were as low as 260 on June 18.
Coronavirus-related deaths are down, however. Daily deaths peaked at 68 on April 29. The virus killed eight people on Thursday.
The state has not reported more than 20 new deaths since June 20. Daily deaths have hovered between two and 18 since then.
Hospitalizations, which peaked at 1,711 on April 30, are also down. As of Friday morning, 434 Marylanders were hospitalized with the virus.
Anybody with questions about coronavirus or testing should call the health line at (410) 222-7256. The line is staffed on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises doing the following to slow the spread of coronavirus:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If this is not available, use hand sanitizer that is at least 60 percent alcohol.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
- Keep 6 feet of space between people.
- Stay home.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
The CDC lists these as symptoms of coronavirus:
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
- Fatigue
- Muscle or body aches
- Headache
- New loss of taste or smell
- Sore throat
- Congestion or runny nose
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
