Chesapeake Basketball Looks To End Losing Skid

The Cougars will face Glen Burnie and hope to end their four-game losing streak.

The Chesapeake boys’ basketball team has lost their last four games, and will look to climb out of their slump Friday as the Cougars take on Glen Burnie.

The Cougars haven’t won a game since Jan. 6 when they defeated . That night, the team looked great as they utilized a fast-paced and completely dominate press. Since then, the team has struggled to establish a defensive presence in games.

Head coach Marlon Bailey commented on the team’s lack of defensive intensity the last few weeks after the on Wednesday night.

“We are going back to defense in practice, it has gotten away from us,” Bailey said. “Our guys got confident because we won five games and they thought ‘oh we can score, we can score on anybody.’ But now we’re not stopping anybody, so we have to go back to ground one and that is straight defense. We have to prepare for Glen Burnie—if we don’t play defense there, it could get ugly real quick.”

The Glen Burnie Gophers are ranked No. 19 in the Washington Post’s high school basketball rankings. The Gophers are 14-1 this season with their only loss coming to No. 14-ranked Arundel.

When the two schools met on back in December, Chesapeake lost 68-50. Cougar guard Aaron Terry said that in order to avoid another loss to the Gophers, they needed to have an intense day of practice on Thursday and keep everyone’s spirits up despite the slump.

“We just need to keep everyone up and positive,” Terry said. “We need to try to keep our confidence up because our confidence hasn’t been up in a while.”

Despite the struggles in recent weeks, Bailey said the team was looking forward to the challenge the Gophers bring and thinks the Cougars will get back on the winning side of the board soon enough.

“We’ll bounce back,” Bailey said. “We always do.”
