ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY, MD — An Arundel County police officer who noticed a school bus pulled over on the shoulder of Route 100 Sept. 18 with its stop sign activated and lights flashing found the school bus driver slumped over in the front seat drunk, police say.

The Anne Arundel County Public Schools bus driver, 36-year-old Angela Cassidy of Edgewater, now faces DUI charges. The off-duty officer who found Cassidy radioed for a backup officer on duty to conduct a field sobriety test, which police say she failed.

According to Mark Limanksy with the Anne Arundel County Police Department, the first officer knocked on the door to try and wake her up, but was "unsuccessful."

“He then climbed through the emergency exit door on the bus, went and awakened the bus driver and noticed signs of impairment," Limansky told WJZ.

While no students were on the bus at the time Cassidy was discovered, police opened an investigation to see if she had been driving intoxicated with students on the bus. On Sept. 19, Cassidy was cited for driving under the influence of alcohol and related offenses. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 25 in Anne Arundel County District Court.
