Eagle Cove School Hosts Gospel Music, Dance

Event Held in Memory of Deana Michelle Ulmer-Bostick to Raise Money for Scholarship Fund

Deana Michelle Ulmer-Bostick may no longer be living, but her memory lives on through a scholarship fund at Eagle Cove School in Pasadena.

An evening of gospel music and dance was held Saturday night at the school for the second year, and Ulmer-Bostick's mother said on the eve of Mother's Day she is grateful for the musicians and dancers who offered their talents to raise nearly $1,000 for the scholarship fund.

"She passed in 2001 and I worked at the school for 12 years and she worked after school at the school," Deborah Bostick said.

Bostick said her son attended the school on Mountain Road as well as her daughter's son, Keion.

"When Deana passed, our family and the school got together to have the scholarship fund, and we are holding it for the second time," she said about the gospel evening.

The New Heart of God Praise Dancers, Floyd Tasker and Company and the United Voices of Praise Choir from Asbury Town Neck United Methodist Church in Severna Park performed to help raise money for the scholarship fund.

Craig Dobson, director of United Voices of Praise Choir, said he is happy to help with the fundraising effort.

"First off, as an educator, anything I can do to help a young person further their education, if I can do something to help someone in any way, I'm all in," he said.

Dobson said his daughter was dressed for prom the same evening as the concert, so he had to savor those moments quickly to get to the school.

"I saw my daughter for a minute. I was there for a hug and to get her picture for a minute," he said.

Founded in 1956, as Gibson Island Country School, Eagle Cove School includes pre-kindergarten to fifth-grade students. They are from Pasadena, Severna Park, Glen Burnie, Millersville, Arnold, Annapolis, Baltimore and Gibson Island, according to the school's web site, http://www.eaglecoveschool.org.

Laura Kang, head of the school, said the evening of gospel music and dance would have been held last year -- making this year the third year -- but the school suffered a fire and it was not possible to hold the event.

Kang said money raised for the scholarship fund will definitely be put to good use.

"There's always a student they're supporting," she said of the scholarship fund and those who make donations. "They have to be excellent students all around, so it's win-win all around."

Kang said during a fall festival last year a donation point was set up so donations could be made to the scholarship fund. Donations are expected to continue to be made, and are appreciated.
